Comcast DataBee Ingestion and Configuration Redesign
2023 | Product Design, Cybersecurity, B2B Saas
A B2B SaaS platform enabling cybersecurity teams to seamlessly manage data ingestion, configuration, and event analysis through intuitive workflows and visual tools

INTRODUCTION

Comcast DataBee is a cloud-native platform for managing security, risk, and compliance data. My team and I were tasked with designing new user experiences to help users manage data quality, mapping, and parsing while visualizing complex relationships between entities. Our goal was to create intuitive workflows, enhance navigation, and deliver tools that empower users to gain actionable insights.

MY ROLE

Responsible for analyzing workflows and pain points, conducting competitive analysis, designing user flow and wireframes, writing design documentation for dev handoff

THE TEAM

1 UX designer, 1 directors of interaction design, 1 director of experience strategy, 1 visual designer

TIMELINE

Sept 2023 - Oct 2023

THE CHALLENGE

Comcast DataBee needed to introduce new features to support tasks like data quality management, ingestion, and mapping. With no pre-existing workflows or tools for these processes, users required seamless navigation, clear visualizations, and intuitive designs to effectively interact with the system.

KEY OBJECTIVES

1
Design new dashboard and navigation experiences to streamline access to tools
2
Develop workflows for data quality, ingestion, and mapping, ensuring ease of use
3
Create an entity detail view with filtering and diagram functionality for better data analysis

WHAT WE DID

Enhanced Navigation

Added options to the global navigation, enabling users to download both preset and customizable dashboards powered by DataBee's data.

Data Quality, Ingestion, and Configuration Flow

Designed a comprehensive data ingestion and configuration flow to enable users to connect and manage data sources seamlessly. This included creating a step-by-step guided process for configuring data sources, and designing workflows for tasks like applying IAM policies, setting up parsing rules, and schema mapping.

We implemented a visual stepper to provide users with clear progress indicators and designed features such as customizable parsing tools, Auto Map functionality for schema alignment, and validation tests to ensure successful connections. These solutions simplified complex workflows, improved usability, and empowered users to efficiently manage and visualize their data.

Entity Detail View

Designed a detail view with robust filtering options and a diagram view to visualize events.

• Events are displayed within a selected date range, with default filters showing only high-risk events.
• Filters can be adjusted to reveal all events.
• Introduced the ability to merge entity views for streamlined analysis.

ENTITY DETAIL VIEW DEFAULT STATE
EVENT DIAGRAM

I designed a diagram view for the Entity Detail View, called the Event Diagram, allowing users to visualize information about events occurring within a selected date range. This diagram displays similar metadata as the Event List View but focuses on a visual representation of the data. At the center of the diagram is the primary entity (a user or device entity), with nodes branching out to represent related entity types, data sources, events, or multiple events.

Through multiple rounds of iterations, I was able to achieve the final result. Each node in the diagram includes key details, such as risk-elevating points (+11 in a red circle) connected to the associated node. To enhance usability, we incorporated a Legend Dropdown, which provides users with insight into each node type and what it signifies. This visual tool helps users better understand relationships and patterns within the data, making it easier to analyze and act on critical insights.

RESULTS + TAKEAWAYS

Our designs introduced powerful new tools and workflows to Comcast DataBee, enabling users to:

• Navigate the platform more intuitively through an enhanced global dashboard.
• Manage data quality, ingestion, and configuration tasks with ease using the guided stepper.
• Perform advanced searches within time ranges to streamline data discovery.
• Analyze and merge entity views with the new detail view and diagram feature.

This project required close collaboration with stakeholders, the Director of Experience Strategy and Interaction Design, and a Visual Designer on our team. While the complexity of the subject matter was significant, we didn’t need to be experts in cybersecurity to create a better experience. Through regular discussions with stakeholders, we gained valuable insights into user needs, business goals, and technical constraints.

Their guidance allowed us to apply key UX principles and best practices to streamline workflows, improve usability, and elevate the overall experience. Our team leveraged this input to design intuitive interfaces, effective data visualization tools, and actionable workflows that optimized user interactions while aligning with business objectives. This collaborative process was critical to delivering a cohesive, user-friendly solution for a complex B2B SaaS platform.

Designing for Comcast DataBee was a rewarding experience that challenged me to create user-friendly solutions for complex data workflows. This project reinforced my ability to collaborate across teams and design intuitive interfaces that meet both user needs and technical goals.
